The department teaches 34 leading disciplines. The most important of them are “Reliability and technical diagnostics of railway rolling stock”, “General structure of locomotives and their interaction with technical means of railway transport”, “Internal combustion engines”, “Fundamentals of locomotive operation”, “Organization of locomotive repair production”, “Theory and design of locomotives "," Theory of locomotive traction "," The latest technologies to ensure energy saving traction rolling stock "," Modern information technology in the locomotive TBE "," Fundamentals of definition of traction rolling stock of the life cycle. "

During the whole period of its existence, the department constantly trains scientists of the locomotive economy and dissertations are defended in specialized scientific councils of the Academy and other scientific institutions.

There are scientific schools in the department. These are the following scientific schools: professors SG Zhalkina in the direction of efficiency and reliability of locomotive operation, taking into account seasonal operation; Professor AB Babanin on the development of maintenance and repair, technical diagnostics and logistics; Prof. Ustenko A.V. in the direction of improving the methods of technical operation of the rolling stock of railways and metro; Prof. Puzyr VG in the direction of pre-trip control of locomotives and locomotive crews, the introduction of technical diagnostics, certification and licensing of locomotive depots; Professor A. Falendish in the direction of the complex assessment of the technical level and operational efficiency of traction rolling stock, the development of new types of diesel locomotives and diesel trains; Professor Zhalkin DS in the direction of improving the design, the maintenance system and the diesel engine TR, taking into account seasonal operation; Professor Krasheninin A.S. in the direction of increasing the service life of the rolling stock.

The main results of the research work are as follows: the department established an information technology laboratory and mathematical modeling, developed and approved an industry concept for the development of a diagnostic system in a locomotive farm, made samples of electronic controllers for diesel-generator diesel locomotives, created a laboratory for automated design and microprocessor control systems traction rolling stock.

Specialists of the department constantly take part in the development of technical documentation, the creation, research and testing of new domestic rolling stock.

Leading scientists of the department, carrying out research work on the order of railway enterprises of Ukraine, carry out the creation of new and processing of existing technological processes of maintenance and repair of traction rolling stock.

The department "Maintenance and repair of rolling stock" is the main scientific organization of Ukrzaliznytsia for diesel locomotives and diesel trains, and its experts are constantly involved in the development of new types of fourth and fifth generation locomotives.

The basis for the training of highly qualified specialists is the research work of students in the field of creating and testing a new generation of traction rolling stock, the development and implementation of new technologies for the recovery of locomotive assemblies.

The pride and authority of the department consists not only of academic disciplines, laboratories and scientific schools - first of all, its graduates who are proud of the department.
