During the entire time of the department's existence, its staff actively worked in various directions of research work, which was aimed at improving the design of the units of wagons and ensuring the reliability of their operation in the conditions of operation.

Significant studies were performed by Professor P.V. Shevchenko on issues of increasing the reliability of the press coupling of the axle of a wheel pair of cars with a hub of the wheel. At the level of his doctoral dissertation, the work "Development of design and calculation of the strength of hollow wagon rugs" was performed.

Significant contribution to the improvement of hinged knots of the braking system and the air supply brake line was made in the 1960's by associate professor MF. Feldman Under his guidance, IV Antonov and KI Boyko carried out research on the possibility of use on a rolling stock of hydraulic anti-theft auto regulators.

In 1964, the department established a unique research laboratory "Photovoltage", where it became possible to solve complex issues of increasing the strength of parts and units of cars and other structures. In the case of cars, research was carried out for heavy machinery and car-building plants. The polarization-optical method of the strength of the cylinder-piston group of engines was studied, as well as the regularity of the elastic state and the strength of the gas turbine blades fastening for the Kharkiv turbine plant was checked. He actively worked and organized the work of the Laboratory "Photoplace", associate professor of the department "Theoretical Mechanics" YB Volkovich

To the scientific work of the department widely involved students who were prone to research and then replenished the ranks of scientific staff of the research laboratory.

On the department there are experienced industrialists, former graduates: V.S. Fomenko, O.G. Milashich, VV Polyakov, D.A. Dubyaga, SI Nechvoloda, MKGreb'onkin.

As a result of active activity at the department of the scientific school, in 1966 he defended his doctoral dissertation G.P. Andreev, then rector of the Ukrainian correspondence polytechnic institute. Ph.D. theses were defended in 1968 by V.V. Shevchenko, in 1971 - AP Gorbenko, A.O. Radzihovsky, MV Korenivsky, in 1975 - V.G. Chernysh, in 1977 - E.V. Fedorets and V.V. Novikov, in 1978 - VS Zhdamarov

Later, as followers of the scientific direction of Professor P.V. Shevchenko, defended candidate's dissertations S. I. Nechvoloda (1984), I. D. Borzilov (1990), M. K. Greb'onkin (1994).

Scientific researches of the department were carried out in the form of municipal and state budget work, the leaders of which were mainly teachers of the department. The annual volume of contract works amounted to 40-50 thousand rubles. Stable customers of the contract works were the Kryukivsky, Ural and Stakhanov carriages, the Main Directorate of the carriage facilities of the Ministry of Communications of the USSR. For the fulfillment of the contract works, the staff of scientific staff was created. The scientific staff were E. V. Lukin, I. D. Borzilov, L. M. Kulik, V. V. Malovichko and others. According to the results of the research work, many researchers defended the dissertation and then replenished the lions of teachers.

After the formation of the State Administration of Railway Transport specialists of the Department took an active part in solving urgent problems of the carriage economy. So, the department took part in the state program "Development of measures for reducing the wear of a pair of" wheel-rail ". The teachers of the department actively participated in the work of the scientific-methodical commission of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine in the direction of "Railway Transport", the Technical Committee of Ukraine on Standardization in the railway transport, the Scientific and Technical Council for the carriage headquarters of Ukrzaliznytsia.

With the direct participation of the faculty members of the department, on the basis of the carriage station "Osnova", a branch school of advanced experience in equipping the car park with modernized roller bearings with polyamide separators was held.

Recently, at the department under the guidance of Professor Martinov I. E. scientific research is carried out on increasing the reliability of the bucket units of cars by improving the design and implementation of modern technologies for diagnosing the technical condition (Trufanova AV, Petukhov VM, Ravlyuk V.G. , Shovkun V.O.). Professor I. D. Borzilov is working on improving the technical maintenance of cars to improve the efficiency of their use. Issues of modernization of the brake system of freight cars are devoted to the research of associate professor S.I. Nechvolod, development of measures to reduce the wear intensity of parts of the rolling stock of cars - associate professor AP Gorbenko. On the creation of modern means of technical diagnostics and systems of acoustic control of wheel pairs under the direction of associate professor Bondarenko V.V. Skurikhin D.I. The researches of associate professor Vysnjak R.I. and Lovskoy A.O. are devoted to ensuring the safety of wagons in international rail-water communication.

In accordance with the indicated directions of scientific activity, the department closely cooperates with the Main Directorate of the carriage economy, the Main Passenger Department, the Main Directorate of suburban passenger transport of Ukrzaliznytsia, the State Enterprise Ukrainian Research Institute of Wagon Engineering, the services of the carriage economy and passenger services of the railways of Ukraine, the Design Bureau of the Main Directorate of the carriage Ukrzaliznytsia, PJSC "Kryukiv Carriage Works", "Azovmash", PJSC "Stak" novskyy Car Plant ", JSC" Kharkov Bearing Plant "and many other companies and institutions.

The department collaborates with related departments of the Moscow and St. Petersburg University of Railways, as well as with leading world manufacturers of bearing units for rolling stock: the Swedish company SKF, the American companies TIMKEN and Brenco. Art. Professor AV Trufanova took part in the accreditation of the SKF plant for the production of boot units for freight wagons in the town of Willar-Peroz (Italy), and prof. Martynov took part in the accreditation of the plant "Brenco" for the production of box trucks for freight cars in St. Petersburg (USA).
