History of the Department

The history of the Department of Structural Mechanics and Hydraulics dates back to 1934 when the Department of Structural Mechanics was established. First it was part of the Mechanical School, and since 1945 it has been a unit of the Building School.
Professor Yakov Stoliarov was appointed the first Head of the department (1934–1938).
In 1902, graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Technology.
Since 1904 – professor of the Kharkiv Institute of Technology.
Since 1930 – the head of the Department of Reinforced Concrete Constructions at the Kharkiv Institute of the Building Engineering, Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Constructions.
1934–1938 – the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics of Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineering.
The author of more than 150 scientific works on structural mechanics, strength of materials, machine theory, the theory of reinforced concrete constructions, including three textbooks.
In 1938–1941 and 1946–1951 the Department of Structural Mechanics was headed by Professor Mykola Rakivnenko. From 1941 to 1946, the head of the department was Volodymyr Hlahovskyi.
In 1926, graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Technologies, got qualification of a civil engineer.
In 1932, graduated from the postgraduate studies at the Kharkiv Institute of Technologies.
From 1935 – associate professor of the Department of Structural Mechanics in the Kharkiv Institute of Transport engineering.
In 1937, defended his PhD thesis.
In 1939, received the academic rank of professor.
In 1938–1941, 1946–1951, the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics at Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineering.
The main direction of the scientific achievements is dynamic calculations of constructions. The author of the 15 academic papers.
Associate Professor V. Hlahovskyi.
Born in 1892.
In 1913, graduated from the Mathematical School of the Novorosiiskyi University.
In 1914–1917, studied at the Petrograd Institute of Technologies.
In 1924, an inspector of professional and technical education at the Education Department of the Southern Railway.
In 1926–1932, lecturer of theoretical mechanics and metal resistance at the Higher Technical courses of NKPS.
From 1932, lecturer of Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineering.
1940 – PhD.
1941 – Associate Professor.
1941–1946 – the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics.
Professor Hlahovskyi is an author of the textbook on strength of materials and published a number of scientific articles.
In 1944 the Department of Hydraulics and Water Supply was established. Soon it became a unit of the Building School. From its establishing to 1972 the head of the department was famous hydrotechnical scientist Dr.Sci.Eng. Oleksandr Uhinchus.

In 1925, graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute.
In 1925–1933, lecturer of Hydraulics in the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute and Leningrad Hydrotechnic Institute.
In 1929–1930, worked at the Ulianovsk Hydroelectric power station building, and from 1933 to 1937 worked at the construction of “Moscow-Volga” channel.
In 1937–1941, the head of the Department of Hydrotechnical Constructions in the Omsk Agriculture Institute.
1940 - Dr.Sci.Eng., Professor.
In 1944–1972, the head of the Department of Hydraulics and Water Supply of Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineering.
The author of 50 academic papers including 5 textbooks and 8 monographs. He was the research advisor of 30 PhDs and 2 Dr.Sci.Eng.
In 1951–1973, the famous scientist and Dr.Sci.Eng. Oleksii Vynohradov was the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics, followed by Associate Professor PhD Yurii Kitov (1973–1983) and PhD, Associate Professor Volodymyr Andriievskyi (1983–1990).

Born in 1912.
In 1930–1935, studied at the Moscow Communication Lines Engineering Institute.
In 1935–1941 worked at the Central Scientific Research Institute of Communication Lines NCWC. From 1941 to 1945 worked in the Major administration of the military emergency relief staff.

1950 – Dr.Sci.Eng.
In 1951–1973, the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics, Professor of Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineering.
In 1973–1974, scientific advisor of Kucherenko Central Scientific Research Institute of Building Constructions.
The author of more than 60 articles and two monographs. He was the research advisor of 27 PhDs.

Born in 1925.
In 1943 he was badly wounded defending a country from the Nazi aggressors.
In 1945–1950, studied at the Building School of the Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineering.
In 1950–1956, an engineer of the Bridge Department of the Institute “Kharhiprotrans”.
In 1956–1962, assistant professor, postgraduate of the Department of Structural Mechanics.
In 1964 – PhD.
In 1966 – Associate Professor.
In 1973–1983, the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics.
In 2004 – got a rank of Professor.
С In 1983–2010, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of Structural Mechanics and Hydraulics of the Ukrainian State Academy of Railway Transport.
The author of more than 100 academic papers including 5 textbooks. A specialist in the field of calculating and optimal designing of bridges and constructions with stress control.

Born in 1928.
In 1949–1954, studied at the Mechanical School of the Kharkiv Institute of Transport engineering.
In 1954–1957, worked in the Diesel house of the Baskunchak station of the Privolzhsky Road.
From 1957, worked as a lecturer in the Kharkiv Institute of Transport engineering.
1963 – PhD. 1965 – Associate Professor.
In 1983–1990, the head of the Department of Structural Mechanics.
In 1990–1999, Associate Professor of the Department of Structural Mechanics and Hydraulics of the Ukrainian State Academy of Railway Transport.
The author of more than 45 scientific articles and a monograph, holder of 2 patents and 15 certificates of authorship. The main scope of the research is creating of cages made of glass-nylon materials for the roller bearers.

In 1972 the Department of Hydraulics and Water Supply was merged with the Department of Geodesy under the name “Geodesy, Hydraulics and Water Supply”. PhD, Associate Professor Yurii Shcherbyna was appointed the head of the department.

The author of more than 100 scientific papers. The scope of scientific interests is geodesic surveying.

The author of more than 100 academic papers and methodological developments, holder of 8 patents. The scope of scientific interests includes optimal designing of reinforced concrete and composite constructions, calculating for force and thermal impact.
