Scientific research work of the department is carried out in two main directions: linguistic - “Semantic stylistic investigation of the vocabulary, terminology and phraseology of Germanic and Slavic languages” and methodological – “Methodological support of educational process for enhancing students’ independent work”.

The department ensures methodological provision of the educational process within the framework of credit-module system, updates curriculum and educational programs. Special emphasis is given to developing methodological support for the newly opened speciality “Philology” which comprises writing study guides, textbooks, lecture and seminar summaries for such disciplines as “The Latin language”, “Annotation and abstracting”, “The History of the English Language”, “Lexicology”, “Stylistics”, etc..

The department collaborates with Kharkiv and region schools providing them with methodological and study guides for passing Ukrainian independent external evaluation in English as well as giving training seminars on the latest methods of teaching English for the teachers of regional schools. There is also annual regional educational English Forum held by the department for the teachers and school leavers from all over the Kharkiv region. It aims to acquaint school-leavers with the peculiarities of European education, possibilities of obtaining double diploma, and to discuss the choice of profession in terms of Ukrainian economic development outlook.

The teachers of the department are active members of international Ukrainian-American association of English language teachers “TESOL” and take part in all its annual activities: international conferences, intensive methodological seminars with visiting presenters from the USA and Great Britain, summer schools with the USA Embassy support.

Scientific research students’ work involves preparation of reports, writing conference abstracts and research papers, taking part in scientific technical conferences of our University and Ukrainian higher educational establishments.
